Delphine Lebourgeois’ ongoing series ‘Army’ is focused on the female fight for personal creativity, personal freedom and recognition of our skills whilst giving a nod to the fact that humour can carry us a long way in the fight. Army II depicts a force of women to be reckoned with, intermingled with recognisable characters from childhood stories and modern fables. Delphine suggests that although the image at first glance may seem strident and perhaps aggressive, there is a softness of touch we should not overlook. Although women are still fighting for equality, Army II & Army III can be interpreted that we are all in this together and still want and need to have a bit of fun along the way, and most importantly to not be fighting one another.
